"The U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard has been part of Navy history since 1931 as they were first established as a temporary ceremonial detail at the Naval Gun Factory. They are stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and provide service in Presidential, Joint Armed Services, Navy, and public ceremonies including local and national holidays, armed forces observances, ship commissioning ceremonies, changes of command, and retirements.
Members of the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard are comprised of the drill team, color guard, casket bearers, and firing party.
"We had 33 recruits interested in joining the guard; 25 of them were interviewed," said Master-at-Arms 1st Class Malart Cunningham, U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard Recruiting staff member. "In addition to looking at appearance, height, posture and confidence when selecting guard members, we also like to bring recruits with different backgrounds to bring in different aspects of life to the command."
Performing in numerous Joint Service and Navy ceremonies, the colors platoon members are hand selected. They must meet the 6 foot 2 inch height criteria and show an exceptional aptitude for military bearing.
Casket bearers carry the Navy's past to their resting ground. Whether it is in Arlington National Cemetery, or another veteran's cemetery, their mission is honoring those who have come before us.
The firing party renders 3 volleys, the signature honor of military funerals, during every Navy Funeral at Arlington National Cemetery."

For many of you that, in earlier years, were dues paying members of the Guard Alumni Association, please consider reactivating your membership. For those past Guard members that have not joined, here’s an opportunity to reconnect with Alumni shipmates and become involved in preserving the legacy of the Ceremonial Guard. The new Executive Team is committed to expanding and improving the organization in a positive environment, while fostering open communications among all members.
Membership in the U. S. Navy Ceremonial Guard Alumni Association is open to all individuals who have served in the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard. Dues are an integral way for the Association to be able to meet expenses (bus rentals, refreshments for hotel hospitality rooms, name badges, memorial wreaths incurred for Reunions, as well as website costs). Current annual dues for the calendar year are $30.00. If you haven’t submitted dues, please become an active member and support the Association. A dues form is attached below. Alumni members in good standing can obtain periodic updates to the Guard Alumni Roster that is password protected.
Please click the 'Dues Form' below to register as an active member. You can pay here on the website or dues checks can be addressed to USNCGAA and mailed to the Guard Alumni Association Treasurer, Ryan Smith (address on form).
Please feel free to pay for your yearly membership dues here.
Your support and contributions will enable us to provide you with more opportunities to connect with your fellow alumni.
Your generous donation is greatly appreciated.
If you would like to register with the Alumni Association as a due paying member but have questions first, please leave your information and send us a message! Please include the years you served and your positions in the Guard during your service in the assigned boxes. After we have received your information, we will contact you as soon as possible and talk about membership opportunities.
Once dues are paid and your status as an Alumni Member are confirmed, you will be given a password to access the Alumni Roster where your fellow Alumni Members information (along with yours) will be displayed.
Please keep the information on the Alumni Roster confidential.
